Who Let the Dogs Out?

Not DAWGS, but DOGS.

That's what I asked myself when I watched a very tiny bit of this year's Pro Bowl. Yeah, I know, Fitzgerald was impressive and there were a few cute moments, but does anyone take this game seriously? Of course not. That doesn't mean it is not a grand honour to get there, and I take my hat off to and salute our boys Rogers, Thomas and Pontbriand, but the actual game itself is like watching beach volleyball without the slinky outfits. This is not unique to pro football. All pro sports find it very hard to generate interest in the all-star games because nobody really cares. But football is especially vulnerable to that malaise because the Pro Bowl is played after the Super Bowl when everyone has lost interest until the next opening weekend. Next year the league will move the event ahead of the Super Bowl and play the game in Miami. Will that make it better? Maybe, but not for anyone who will be playing in the big show for fear of injury. It really can't be avoided unless there is some incentive to win. For example, imagine if the winning conference got to have one of its teams host the next year's Super Bowl - perhaps by lottery or by the team in that conference that had the most players voted to the Pro Bowl. Or if the teams in the winning conference got an extra pick in the draft for the following year. Those ideas would make the game more competitive and serious because each side would have some incentive to win. Until something is done the product won't change. I love seeing the Browns go to the Pro Bowl, and I think they should be proud of that accomplishment. I just wish that after they got there they had a little more to play for.

Just my two cents...

Go Browns Go! It is season tickets renewal time - show your support for your team.

Clayton
