The Big Fish that Got Away

In honour of the ongoing free agency frenzy, it is worth remembering how this process can so immensely affect the future of a football team. Perhaps the biggest potential free agent that the Browns came close to signing was Reggie White in 1993. White of course went on to greatness with Favre and the Packers and the Hall of Fame in 2006. But he was very close to being a Brown. Cleveland pushed hard for Reggie when he left the Eagles 16 years ago. In fact the Browns met with White more than once and bought his wife an expensive coat to try to woo the superstar to Cleveland. In the end he chose to sign with the Packers. He was the big fish that got away. Imagine how things might have been different if he had been a Brown. The lesson is an important one - it is not how many players you sign at free agency time but rather whether you can land the big fish.
Go Browns!
