If Favre will assist largely behind-the-scenes with mentoring and training Anderson and Quinn, then it cannot hurt and is worth the limited risk of distraction with the media. If, however, this is any veil attempt to discover whether Brett wants to come out of retirement (again), then please spare us the agony.
One look at Brett's performance last year with the Jets tells it all - he is a Hall of Fame quarterback whose better playing days are behind him. Consider these statistics from 2008 compared to Brett's overall career numbers.
Quarterback Rating
2008 - 81.0
Career - 85.4
Passing Yards per Game
2008 - 217.0
Career - 238.6
Passing Yards per Attempt
2008 - 6.7
Career - 7.0
Rushing Yards per Game
2008 - 2.7
Career - 6.7
Average Yards per Rush
2008 - 2.0
Career - 3.2
Fumbles
2008 - 10 Tied for second highest in his 18 year career
Touchdowns
2008 - 22 The same as his number of interceptions thrown in 2008 - 22
Clearly, Favre's performance in 2008 in most categories was poor relative to the rest of his career. We do not need Brett competing as the third QB.
Go Browns!
