The photo depicts Ahman Green, a free agent running back released recently by the Houston Texans. He could be one of the older free agent running backs that Mangini spoke about yesterday at the NFL owners' meetings in California when he said that the Browns are interested in another RB either through free agency or the college Draft, and that age was not the determinative factor.
This was not an overly impressive year for free agent running backs. And those few that were hot commodities are no longer available, such as former New York Giant Derrick Ward.
Green is one of the best remaining free agent running backs. He is 6 foot tall and weighs about 220 pounds. He is 32 years old - older than Jamal Lewis. He played his college football at Nebraska and has 11 years experience as a pro with the Seattle Seahawks (1998-1999), the Green Bay Packers (2000-2006) and, most recently since 2007, the Houston Texans.
The major knock against Green over the years has been his tendency to fumble the football. He has 37 fumbles over his 11 years in the NFL. Twice he has had seven fumbles in a season (2003 and 2004 with the Packers). But he has not fumbled the ball his last two seasons with the Texans in which he played 14 games. In fact, since the start of the 2005 season, Green has played in a total of 33 games with the Packers and the Texans and has fumbled the ball just five times total while rushing for nearly 2000 total yards over that time period. That is not bad at all.
Over his career, Green has amassed over 9000 rushing yards, nearly 3000 receiving yards and 59 touchdowns. His career average yards per rush is 4.5 - above the median throughout the league. Most recently, in 2008, Green carried the ball 74 times for 294 yards (4.0 yards per rush) and three touchdowns.
If the Browns are looking to pick up a relatively inexpensive veteran running back through free agency, then Ahman Green should be seriously considered.
Go Browns!
