Cleveland Browns' Defensive Tackle Shaun Smith, number 91, had a disappointing season last year. He needs to step-up and produce in 2009. "Big Baby", Shawn Rogers, cannot be expected to hold the defensive line all on his own.
Smith was acquired by the Browns as a free agent in 2007. He played three of his previous four seasons with our Division rival Cincinnati Bengals and the other year with the New Orleans Saints.
Shaun is 27 years old. He has great size at 6 feet 2 inches tall and 325 pounds. Prior to his six seasons as a pro, Smith played his college fotoball at South Carolina.
Shaun did not play at all in five games last season. His poor play on the field led to the coaches questioning his level of motivation. Off the field, there were discipline problems. Smith was benched for the week 16 game after punching Brady Quinn to the head in the weight room during an argument.
In the eleven games that he did play in last year, Shaun tallied 36 tackles. Per game, that statistic was down from the year previous when Shaun had 62 tackles in 15 games. Further, Smith had two sacks in 2007 but none last season.
The Browns have taken some significant steps to address its offensive line through the free agent signings of Floyd "Pork Chop" Womack and John St. Clair, and the draft of Center Alex Mack. But we cannot forget about the defensive line. Shaun Smith needs to start producing.
Go Browns!
