A swarming, relentless defense that can bring several pass rushers on a single down. An eight-man front including a safety that has speed and a menacing attitude positioned just off the line of scrimmage. A defensive scheme which focusses on aggression and confusion. One that attacks the opposing quarterback or ball carrier from all angles. A defense that resembles the legendary "46" defense of Buddy Ryan and the 1980s Chicago Bears.
If you like the picture painted above, then you have to be excited to hear the recent comments by Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Ryan stated that he and Mangini are going to introduce the "46" defense into the package this season. Mangini has been a big proponent of the "46" since his days in New England. The mastermind of that scheme, Buddy Ryan (Rob's father), will be visiting Berea at training camp.
For years, we have wondered why the "46" seems to have gone by the wayside. The west-coast style offense with the receivers in a spread formation makes the deep-ball a legitimate threat for the opposing team, however, that assumes that the QB has sufficient time to throw the football. A good "46" does not allow that time. Further, the "46" should be used sporadically and not necessarily as the principal formation.
We thought of being creative with the title of this post, but in the end, what better way to salute the means to winning football games than to simply say DEFENSE!
Go Browns!
